an adult man who, even if he wasn’t intimately acquainted with killua’s family, had more than enough evidence to put together that nen had been used and therefore his test had been compromised. but that just is more of a condemnation of netero’s behavior here.Īn adult man has put the “natural order” of his test and the whole “secret test” part of it (which is already shot to death, more than one applicant already knows nen) over the mental and physical safety of a 12 ( 11 in the manga) year old boy.Īn adult man who has the authority to put a stop to it permanently, who is both physically and socially powerful enough to save a child from being abused and mind controlled by his parents and family. and you know what? that’s probably the in-universe reason. You could argue “netero didn’t want to reveal nen to them”. just my 2 cents? other people's thoughts trauma abuse psychology hxh is actually really good if you like well-done psychology i say as someone with a BA in psychology i love.hxh. i think with killua you could kind of get by with common knowledge about child abuse, but i’d still recommend looking it up a little.

it’s really, i would argue, necessary to know this to completely understand kurapika. I would recommend… for starters, honestly, just googling things like “psychological trauma” “effects of child abuse”, etc, and you’ll already be getting hxh a lot more, i think. it’s explosions and action and friendship!

it doesn’t sell itself as a series with any real psychology knowledge necessary to completely grasp it. but killua and kurapika are in extremely similar boats.īut hxh doesn’t tell you “these characters are trauma survivors so go research how that works and then you’ll understand why they think and behave the way they do”. people tend to be more sympathetic towards killua because he hasn’t done anything huge to psychologically hurt gon yet, and because it’s more explicit within the text that the things that happened to him don’t just make him angry but also scared and sad.

trauma and mental issues related to it are actually really central parts of hxh but hxh doesn’t advertise itself as a psychological series.įor example, understanding what happens to a trauma survivor internally when they’re suddenly cut off from a friendly support network doesn’t excuse kurapika’s recent behavior, but it makes it a million times more understandable, or at least i think less people would be calling him “stupid” if they knew.

there’s a lot of behavior, especially from kurapika, that is common from trauma survivors, but sometimes gets interpreted by fans as “selfish” or “stupid” because they simply don’t know how trauma works. This talk about interpreting gon as having been potentially a victim of csa and the trauma linking back to that and how almost no one’s ever caught that before cycles back to the fact that killua and kurapika are, inarguably (like, this is completely heavily stated over and over, textually in canon), both heavily traumatized characters and are actually reacting to their trauma in ways that RL trauma survivors often do.
